I had to go in kicking and screaming, trying to avoid the vortex of the TikTok. I didn't want to do it. I didn't plan to do it, but I had to do it. I was convinced by my best friend to give it a whirl because it was not as insufferable as the rest. That it catered to niches. Yet still I was afraid. I was horrified at the idea of being forced to watch terrible teenage dancing disguised as “cool and fun.” That was the TikTok I had heard about. Long gone are the days when Facebook traumatized me with endless photos of people’s meals. Why was society sharing food on screens? Why was this a thing?
Then came the politics and crazy people everywhere. All the girls started morphing into Kylie Jenner clones, but all I saw were Muppet faces from Sesame Street. The fights, the fake, and then came the cancel culture. The modern-day version of townspeople objecting to something with burning torches ready to burn a witch at stake. I was done by this point. 2016 was the year I left social media and could not return.
And so I came to a point in my life where I completed a few novels. I want to connect with other writers and understand the publishing industry. I then surrendered and entered the realm of Booktok. It is better than what other social media have become, but I still only linger there almost like a ghost because I don't fit in. Maybe I’ve been gone too long. Maybe I’ve just lost the plot. I make funny videos, but after that I'm like meh.
And so I decided to go off and make myself an author website. This is more up my alley. This is something I am used to. I had an array of businesses in the past, and using websites was the stepping stone for me to get there. Like a knight, I set off to claim a digital land of my own. I found a place to build, and off I went building my castle, that is my website.
I am happy in my little kingdom. And although I will continue to visit the Booktok, my website is where I will live :)
