The Writers Playhouse Workshop

Welcome to The Writers Playhouse

The unconventional writer workshop experience tailored for writers who want to meet other writers and have fun doing it. A place to make friendships, break free of rigid rules, laugh, experiment, and rediscover how much fun writing can be. Inspired by Pee-Wee's playhouse that once made me feel free to be a crazy creative kid.

What happens in the writer's playhouse

Topic of the day

We begin each class with a deep dive into one writing topic, anything from characterization, scene-building, and pacing to writer’s block strategies. Each session has a different theme

Silly Writing Games

Quick, playful activities designed to stretch your imagination and help you think outside the box. Prompts, challenges, and little surprises keep the creativity flowing.

Music Intergration

We listen to a piece of music as a group, then spend a few minutes free-writing whatever was inspired by that music. Test what music can make you do.

Focused Writing Time

Ten minutes of quiet writing time, just you and your ideas. Use it to build on today’s topic or chase an entirely new spark.

Improv

Every participant steps into the role of one of their own characters. Then, as a group, we act out spontaneous scenes that mix all of these characters together in unexpected situations.

It’s wild, unpredictable, and hilarious—and it’s also one of the best ways to hear your character’s voice, understand how they interact, and break them open in a new way.

Beta Reader Day

Occasionally, we dedicate a session to beta reading. You’ll trade a piece of your writing with one other person, read each other’s work, and then take turns giving feedback.

This is an excellent way to receive thoughtful feedback and to strengthen your ability to critique.

Read out loud

At the end of each class, up to two people may share a piece of their work aloud. Always optional, always supportive.

Wear Funny Hats

Because why not? Occasionally we add a theme day. Dressing up is optional—but if you do, you’ll be in good company. 😊
